New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
